The Awakening and the Legacy of New Orleans: 10 Years After Katrina

As we mark the 10th anniversary since Hurricane Katrina, Bren-Books.com features one of the most pivotal Women’s Novels, a treasure from New Orleans:

The Awakening by Kate Chopin

Publisher: Herbert S. Stone & Co., Chicago and New York, 1899
Used – Very Good Condition.

Set in New Orleans and on the Louisiana Gulf coast at the end of the 19th century, the plot centers on Edna Pontellier and her struggle to reconcile her increasingly unorthodox views on femininity and motherhood with the prevailing social attitudes of the turn-of-the-century American South. It is one of the earliest American novels that focuses on women’s issues without condescension. It is also widely seen as a landmark work of early feminism, generating a mixed reaction from contemporary readers and critics.

The novel’s blend of realistic narrative, incisive social commentary, and psychological complexity makes The Awakening a precursor of American modernist literature; it prefigures the works of American novelists such as William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway and echoes the works of contemporaries such as Edith Wharton and Henry James. It can also be considered among the first Southern works in a tradition that would culminate with the modern masterpieces of Faulkner, Flannery O’ConnorEudora WeltyKatherine Anne Porter, and Tennessee Williams. (from Wikipedia: http://bit.ly/1NciFBx)

Bren-Books.com offers a gorgeous copy in VERY GOOD+ condition. The boards still have the lovely bright designs with just a bit of darkening along the edges and spine ends. The interior is clean and tight with just a bit of browning to the end pages. there is gilt still bright along the top page ends and the pages themselves are rough cut so the outer and bottom ends are irregular.

Highly collectible First Edition and First Printing “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald

In it’s 5th incarnation (including the lost 1926 silent version) will Baz Lurhman’s version of The Greay Gatsby finally succeed where the other 4 have failed?  Always in the top 5 of every list of the great English novels of the 20th century,  F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s classic story has yet to get a film treatment worthy of it’s gorgeous words and uniquely American tale.  Being a Lurhman movie we know it will be opulently staged and filmed.  But at it’s core the love story between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan.  Critics that panned the 1974 version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow in those roles almost unanimously criticized the lack of chemistry between the two.  So how will Leonardo Di Caprio and Casey Mulligan fare?

Before the Baz Lurhman film opens May 2013 do yourself a favor and read or reread this astonishing novel.

Now, for a sneak peek of the upcoming film, enjoy this video of the newest TV spot released by Warner Bros.
