1. The Known World by Edward P. Jones (b. 1950) won not only the 2004 National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, but the 2005 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. In 2009, The Millions website polled 48 critics, writers, and editors, who voted The Known World as the second best novel since 2000. 3. Ralph Ellison (1914-1994) won the 1953 National Book Award for Invisible Man, an instant classic, ranked among the top ten books of the American 20th century.

4. Walter Mosley (b. 1952) has had a prolific career writing predominately mysteries. Devil in a Blue Dress (1990) was made into the terrific film starring Denzel Washington and Don Cheadle. Mosley has established himself as one of the most compelling contemporary mystery writers.

5. Toni Morrison (b.1931) and Alice Walker (b. 1944) are two of the most notable African American women still actively writing today. 1993 Nobel Prize Winner Toni Morrison’s Beloved earned the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1988, while Walker’s The Color Purple won both the 1983 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.
